But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain…
--Exodus 18:21

Please take time to consider the following encouragements, taken from the Voter's Prayer Guide, which you can view HERE.

In this election I am encouraging you to pray for the elections and to help you prepare to exercise one of the most cherished privileges of citizenship—the right to vote, and to vote your values.

From the first prayer offered at the Continental Congress by Jacob Duché to Ben Franklin’s dramatic call for prayer during the Constitutional Convention, America has a rich and continuing history of reliance on prayer.   Whenever our nation has called upon God for guidance and wisdom, He has answered graciously.

"When you become entitled to exercise the right of voting for public officers let it be impressed on your mind that God commands you to choose for rulers just men who will rule in the fear of God. The preservation of a republican government depends on the faithful discharge of this duty; if the citizens neglect this duty and place unprincipled men in office, the government will soon be corrupted."
--Noah Webster, Founding Father

Please pray the following prayer with me and agree with me for our leaders:

Prayer for Leaders
After God’s Own Heart

blueline

Almighty God,

Your Word tells us, "The eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His." You see past our appearance, our education, our occupation, our experience, and You see into our hearts. And those whose hearts are completely Yours find uncommon strength from You.

Lord, as we enter into the upcoming congressional elections, we ask that You would give us leaders who are men and women after Your own heart.

Give us leaders who will lead with integrity and truth. May they be men and women of conviction who are more concerned about doing what is right than about securing a high approval rating.

Guide us to candidates who are honest in the midst of what is often a jaded political process. Although no one is perfect, show us which candidates have been tainted the least and who desire what is best for all Americans.

Please lead us to vote for people who not only have deep seated morals but are grounded in a relationship with You. May these people seek direction from Your Word and from godly advisors. May they be men and women of prayer who don't usurp Your authority but understand that they are answerable to You. And may they be courageous enough to walk in obedience to what You have required of them.

Equip our leaders with the skills to craft and pass laws with knowledge and understanding. Give them the wisdom to know how to achieve concesus.

Lord God, You are the one who sets up leaders and deposes them. You are the one who gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. This November, open the eyes of the American voters so we will see past the appearances and into the heart. Through our leaders, may You turn our hearts toward you.

Bulleted Prayer Points

While many people appreciate pre-written prayers, others prefer to receive prayer points and pray in their own way. If that describes you, here are some points for your prayer time.

Scripture-Based Prayers

Scriptures and Prayers to Prepare Yourself
The following prayers are Scriptures adapted "vertically" to be prayed back to God. This pattern of worship, thanksgiving, confession and requesting will help prepare you to intercede for the elections.

O Lord, You reign over the nations and You rule in righteousness from Your holy throne.
—Psalm 47:8

I praise you for the trustworthiness and truth of Your word and Your person, O God. You are faithful and holy and righteous in all Your ways.
—Psalm 33:4

O Lord, You are great and mighty and majestic in Your power and authority! You see and know all things and there is no limit to Your understanding—it is beyond my comprehension.

—John 8:36

O Lord, I thank you for the spiritual freedom I enjoy because You are present in my life.
—I Corinthians 3:17

All praise to You, O Triune God, for rescuing me from the Evil One. You have brought me into the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, the Son, and you bought my freedom with His precious blood. Thank you for the priceless gift of the forgiveness of my sins.
—Colossians 1:13

III. Confession: Agreeing with God About Sin
O God, I acknowledge that I am a sinner. It is useless to try to hide my sin, because nothing is hidden from Your eyes. I confess my sins to you, thanking you for removing my guilt with Your forgiveness.
—Psalm 32:5

O Lord, help me to be as ready to forgive others for the wrongs they have done to me as I am eager for You to forgive me and take away my sins.
—Matthew 6:12

Heavenly Father, I thank You for your faithfulness and justice, for You have paid the debt of my sin. Cleanse me now and keep me so pure and clean that I no longer want to offend You with my thoughts, words or deeds.
—I John 1:9

IV. Requesting: Calling on God for Help

O God in Heaven, You are faithful and steady. Help me to remain faithful in all my commitments-especially in this commitment to pray for the elections.
—Romans 12:12

Scriptures and Prayers for the Elections

O God, Your plans are firm, faithful and forever. The purposes of Your heart prevail through all the generations. Let Your mighty, perfect will be done in the elections tomorrow.
—Psalm 33:11

O Lord, bring righteous people who fear You to lead our nation into the future. Establish godly leaders who glorify You as they lead, and let their tenure be as welcome as the light of morning at sunrise and like the brightness after rain that brings green grass to the earth.
—II Samuel 23:3-4

O Lord, grant that wicked and evil influences will be weak and impotent in their efforts at bringing down the candidates for election. Usher into authority those who are committed to leading with righteousness.
—Proverbs 25:5

Heavenly Father, You promise to bless us with rejoicing when righteous leaders are in charge. So we ask You for godly, good leaders who will bring joy to those they lead. Do not allow any wicked persons to gain public office in this fall's elections, but only those who will honor You.
—Proverbs 29:2

My Lord, You value so deeply the qualities of good judgment and discernment, but it is easy for us to lose sight of them. Guide all those who will vote in this year's elections a sense of discernment and sound judgment, and let that discernment in turn bring discerning leaders into office.
—Proverbs 3:21

Lord God, during election time it is easy to get wrapped up in the negative, in fault-finding, criticism and contentiousness. Cause our hearts to be sweet and pure, obediently acting as You want Your children to act, so no one can find fault. In this way, we can shine for you in our darkened world.
—Philippians 2:14-15

Mighty God, we look to You for protection and safe keeping, especially during the days leading up to this fall's elections. Keep the candidates, the conventions, the delegates and the media safe from every kind of harm, O Lord, and deliver us from any evil plots that have been arranged. Let no weapon that is formed against our nation or our leaders prosper.
—Psalm 32:7, Isaiah 54:17

Father God, You love truth and are displeased with lies. Grant a spirit of truthfulness in the elections, particularly on the part of all media. Grant a spirit of fairness and honesty in the reports created by all members of the media, and give discernment and wisdom to citizens as they seek information from the media.
—Proverbs 12:22

O God, You are actively involved in every part of Your creation at every moment. Grant to all Americans a willingness to get involved in the upcoming elections, resisting complacency and passivity. Let each one know the value of his or her vote, and let each one exercise their privilege with diligence and faith.
—Amos 6:1

Lord we ask for fairness and justice in the balloting procedures as our citizens vote this fall. May it be just and equitable, revealing the truth with clarity.
—Proverbs 1:3
