Dear Friends, Thailand’s annual water festival has come and gone without much incidence other than the Red Shirt Movement taking its anti-government protests to the capital with renewed zeal. The Songkran festival marks the official start of the Thai New Year. According to the Buddhist Calendar, this is year 2553. Traditionally, this is the time when people throughout the country return to their home towns to pay respect to their elders.
Most of the Christian communities in Thailand take advantage of this week-long holiday by putting on VBS programs for young students. Various Bible studies are also held for youth and adults as well. Nangsar, Katherine, and I, were privileged to participate in one such VBS program and Bible study that was organized for both the youth and adults living in a Rawang village located outside of Chiang Mai. Nearly 50 people attended the three day event.
